HISTORY

THE Gunners are the longest residents in the top flight having been there since 1919.
Herbert Chapman led them to their first trophy in 1930 when they beat Huddersfield to win the FA Cup and they followed that up with their first title the following year.
But after further success immediately before and after the war, Arsenal entered a remarkable spell of 17 years without silverware.
They ended their drought by winning their first European trophy in 1970 with victory over Anderlecht in the final of the Fairs Cup.
And a year later they won the Double — sealing the title with a home win against Tottenham and the FA Cup with Charlie George’s extra-time winner against Liverpool.
Arsenal lost three FA Cup finals in the 1970s but did seal a dramatic victory at Wembley in the 1979 Cup final with Alan Sunderland’s last-minute winner giving them a 3-2 win over Manchester United.
George Graham’s appointment as manager in 1986 led to a resurgence at the club.

He won their first League Cup in 1987 and two years later secured the league title in dramatic style as Michael Thomas scored in the 90th minute at Liverpool to seal the 2-0 win required.
The Gunners won the Cup Winners’ Cup in 1994 with a 1-0 victory over Parma but it was not until French manager Arsene Wenger was appointed did they challenge in the Premier League.
He won the Double in 1997/98 in his first full season as Ian Wright overtook Cliff Bastin as the club’s top scorer – a record he would later lose to Thierry Henry.
They were runners-up to Manchester United in three consecutive seasons but claimed another Double in 2002.
Then in 2004, Arsenal were dubbed ‘The Invincibles’ as they went unbeaten through the entire league campaign – the first such instance in the English top flight since Preston in 1889.
They won the 2005 FA Cup final against Manchester United but lost to Barcelona in the 2006 Champions League final.
But after moving from Highbury to the Emirates Stadium that year, they are yet to win another trophy.

VA VA VOOM ... Arsenal's French striker Thierry Henry
VOTED by Arsenal fans as their greatest ever player, it is hard to find a striker with a better record than Thierry Henry in the modern era.
Despite not being a bona-fide striker when he arrived at Highbury from Juventus in 1999, the Frenchman was soon terrorising English defences and went on to score a club record of 226 goals in 380 league appearances for the Gunners.
His Arsenal CV boasts two league titles, three FA cups, four golden boots and five player of the year awards during his eight-year stint.
Henry played an integral part of Arsenal’s Double winning side of 2002 with 32 goals in all competitions.
And the French striker scored 32 goals and added 23 assists the following season to help the North Londoners win the FA Cup and earn him both the PFA Player’s Player and the Football Writers Association (FWA) Footballer of the Year Awards that summer.
He was also the talisman of Arsenal’s ‘Invincibles’, wading in with 30 league goals in the unbeaten, title-winning side of the 2003/04 season to again scoop the two top individual awards.
His spell in London only left him without two stand-out accolades.
Henry was unlucky not to win the FIFA World Player of the Year Award in 2003 and 2004, finishing runner-up on both occasions.
And he also left without a Champions League medal, despite a final appearance in 2004.
Henry joined Spanish giants Barcelona in 2007 and then moved to play for the New York Red Bulls.
But he came back to the Emirates in 2012 for an emotional two-month loan spell and fittingly scored the winner on his comeback debut against Leeds in the FA Cup.
In 2005 Arsenal fans voted for their ‘Gunners’ Greatest Moments’ and Henry was involved in five of the top 10.
So it was no surprise that in 2008 the Frenchman was voted as Arsenal’s best ever.
